Little Italy District, San Diego



San Diego situated on the shorelines of the Pacific is not only famous for it host of beaches but is also known for its historic neighborhoods. The Little Italy District, San Diego us just one of the unique community neighborhoods which is not only known for its quintessential Italian culture and mores but is also one of the most alluring tourist spots of California.



History of the Little Italy District, San Diego: This part of the city was a domicile to the Italian and Portuguese fishermen community in the beginning of the 20th century. The San Diego Bay which is famous for its aquatic population is not only one of the busiest deep sea ports used for commercial purpose but is also known to be the home to some popular fishes like salmon,tuna and mackeral. As a result it held a lot of attraction for the fishermen who came to settle in this part to earn a better living. Although with time this community has weaned away,much of their cuisine,culture or their social life has been preserved here to give a different feel to the tourists.

Appeal of the Little Italy District, San Diego: Among the alluring attractions of the Little Italy District,are the Italian restaurants, art galleries, stores for designer home décor materials,boutiques with a brilliant display of Italian apparels etc. Tourists with an artistic bent of mind should come to the Art and Design District which occupies the northern part of the neighborhood. Kettner Nights which is a brilliant repository of home furnishing exhibitions and art galleries is the most impelling of the lot. The Little Italy District, San Diego is also noted for its colorful festivals among which the Art Walk festival held in April and Little Italy Carnevale deserves special note.
