Weather and Climate of San Diego



San Diego is a beautiful city located in the Southwestern region of California. The city has a unique topographical feature. From the coast of the Pacific to the rolling mountains, the diversity in the geographical feature of the city leads to a varied climatic condition of the city. Towards the east of the city lies the Laguna mountain range and towards its south lies the famous beaches of San Diego. There is another high mountain, named Mount Soledad in the La Jolla Region. Beyond the mountains in the eastern part of the city are the desert region of San Diego.

On the other hand, there are dense forested areas, around the city of San Diego like the Cleveland National Forest. This great variety in the geographical feature of the city has led to a varied climatic pattern across the city. Though there is a variation in the weather and climate of San Diego, yet it has a predominantly arid climate. The city experiences a warm climate almost throughout the year. Sun shines brightly over the city, especially over the coastal regions along the Pacific coast. These portions of the city has a maritime climate. The average monthly temperature of San Diego ranges between 14 degree Celsius in January to about 22 degrees Celsius in July. As San Diego is situated in a semi arid zone, snowfall is almost absent in these regions. The layer of cloud that invades San Diego during the months of May and June are often referred to as “May Gray and June Gloom”.

At times, the easterly winds bring in hot and dry winds from the desert regions, it is only during these days that the temperature rises. These winds are referred to as “Santa Ana”. The city of San Diego experiences an annual rainfall of only 300 mm. This makes the Weather and Climate of San Diego a semi arid one. Due to the topography of the city, the climatic condition varies within a very small distance.
