City Reservoirs, San Diego



The City Reservoirs of San Diego, commonly referred to as the San Diego City Lakes, comprise the City of San Diego's municipal water supply system. City Reservoirs of San Diego are overall drinking water system of the city. The city of Sun Diego has offered recreation in its overall 9 reservoirs (Barrett, El Capitan, Hodges, Lower Otay, Upper Otay, Miramar, Murray, San Vicente and Sutherland) since 1913, when the nucleus of the present water storage system was purchased from the private operators. It is widely recognized as a leader in the multiple use of water supply reservoirs. There reservoirs and the recreation programs are operated by the Water Operation Division of the Water Department.

Supervised recreational access is provided to the people to all the San Diego City Reservoirs for a variety of traditional outdoor activities, like fishing, boating, canoing, kayaking, sailing, hiking, picnicking, waterfowl hunting etc. With the approval of the City Council in 1989, a highly popular water contact program offering seasonal access for water-skiing, jet skiing and windsurfing has also been implemented. Public activities at the City Reservoirs, San Diego is carefully managed. Efficient and low emission motors on rental and patrol boats are used.

The City Reservoirs of San Diego have beautiful habitats surrounding them. It's nice to visit and enjoy the scenic beauty of those and people often visit the places to spend some quality time. The habitat surround three of the nice reservoirs is protected by the Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP), which is a collaborative effort to preserve the open space and protect the biodiversity in the San Diego region. By protecting the land around the reservoirs, community's water supply are being kept safe and it also provides an important refuge for local wildlife.

People can always visit the reservoirs and enjoy the fun associated with those. Reservoirs are open from sunrise to sunset on operating days only. In addition to a daily City Recreation Permit, a State Fishing License or State Hunting License is required as appropriate. People can buy the tickets of Fishing, Boating, Water Contact, Waterfowl or Turkey Hunting in advance, the cost of which may vary from time to time.
