Lower Otay, San Diego



The Lower Otay, San Diego is located within a 30-minute drive of downtown San Diego, approximately 8 miles east of Chula Vista. It holds the county record Bluegill (3.5 pounds). Lower Otay of San Diego is also the home of the United States Olympic Training center for rowing sports.

Lower Otay Reservoir has 1,1000 surface acres when it is full. It also has a maximum water depth of 137.5 feet and 25 shoreline miles.

The picnic area of Lower Oaty, San Diego contains 13 barbecues and 16 picnic tables. Self-contained barbecues from outside is also allowed for use in designated areas only.

Ground fires and glass containers are not allowed in the Lower Otay reservoir.Dogs must be kept on a leash always and should not reach within 50 feet range from the water of the reservoir. Dogs are not allowed on the boats.

The fishery of the Lower Otay, San Diego, consists of Florida-strain largemouth Bass, Bluegill, white and black Crappie, Channel Catfish, Blue Catfish, White Catfish and Bullhead. The minimum size limit for Bass is said to be 12 inches. There also exist fish limits which include limits of 5 Bass, 5 Catfish and 25 Crappie, with no any other limit on other species.

Patrons can also float tube or even fish form the shore in Lower Oaty, San Diego. All roadsides of Otay and harvey Arms and both the sides of North Point are accessible by foot. Use of float tubes should be restricted within 150 feet or less from the shore. All the float tubers in the Lower City, San Deigo, have to wear a Chest Waders and should also have a Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation device with them. A horn or whistle is a must carry article to warn approaching craft.

The Lower Otay, San Diego remains open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from February through October. Overnight camping is not allowed in Lower Otay. The nearest camping would be Thousand Trails which is 2 miles away. Sweetwater and Bonita County Parks and also be alternate camping spot away by 5 miles.
